Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? These are questions many people frequently ask themselves, especially during the holiday season, as the new year approaches. All too often the first step a person asking her/himself these questions takes is to look for ways to “discover” what that purpose is. The quest to discover one’s life purpose typically creates a cycle of frustration because the person on this journey is actually asking the wrong question.

From the moment we are born we are driven by instincts. Infants can find and latch onto their mother’s nipple as they begin to feel the first pangs of hunger. Toddlers will keep caregivers within sight in unfamiliar environments. Pre-schoolers routinely choose a preferred play area when given the option. Similarly, we all have strong desire to enter certain professions a children. Parents, teachers, friends, and society tend to extinguish that fire before we have had the opportunity to explore it and discover what that means for us. As adults our biggest challenge is not to discover what our life’s purpose is because that inner child is still there whispering what center she wants to play in at choice time. We have become experts at ignoring her.
